The All Broken EP intimately explores every nuance of four new songs by the Garth Erasmus Broken String Ensemble. Garth Erasmus is a multi-instrumentalist channelling his South African heritage in fascinating, entrancing ways with voice, alto sax and a collection of self-built instruments, such as Mcinci, Big Bow and Hose Pipe.
Since the mid eighties his work has aimed to reflect the indigenous knowledge of the KhoiSan, the original people of South Africa, in contemporary contexts. His first album under his own name, Threnody for the KhoiSan (TAL31) was released to much international acclaim just under two years ago. However, the introduction of the newly formed Garth Erasmus Broken String Ensemble marks the beginning of an international working community as well as a low key masterclass in how to refresh one’s music with a renewed sense of wonder and effortlessly insistent breeziness.
Recorded live at Morphine Raum, Berlin and at Raketenfestival, Neuss during a tour in Europe in late 2024, All Broken is the one where expectations should be left at the entrance and where open ears will be rewarded with consistently raw and immersive performances of various self-built instruments (Garth Erasmus), in combination with viola (Ruth May), trumpet (Carina Khorkhordina), cello (Peter Thiessen), synthesizer (Stefan Schneider).
