The experimental double-sided 10-inch vinyl ‘Two Intersecting Loops of Silence’ turns silence into rhythm and time into matter. A work that transforms the familiar vinyl record from a traditional sound carrier into an instrumental sculpture that quite literally puts time into rotation.

Side A features two silent locked grooves, each centred around one of two holes: one central, one off-centre. When played from either hole, the grooves intersect and produce a merely mechanical ticking sound, echoing the passing of seconds. No sound was recorded; but emerges only through the record’s spinning. Over time, as the grooves wear and scratch, the rhythm changes.

Side B reimagines the record as an image carrier. Instead of audio, Mater etched a drawing directly into the copper layer of a DMM master plate, turning a clock-like image into an analogue tactile imprint. When played, the record’s rotation animates this clock drawing, however not arms, but faces turn.

The making of this record was equally experimental as its concept. Every technical step fell outside conventional vinyl production standards: two centre holes, intersecting and off-center silent grooves, etching on DMM plates and pressing without labels. It took over five years, countless tests and conversations with mastering engineers and pressing plants across Europe before finding partners willing to realise this work.

‘Two Intersecting Loops of Silence’ is a study of time, sound, and perception, combining conceptual philosophy with material experimentation. An inquiry into what it means to “record” time, and how time manifests through physical motion.

The numbered edition of 200 copies is released by Futura Resistenza, a label operating between performance, music, and visual art. Each cover is hand-printed using three different test etching plates, turning every copy into a unique artwork.
