»Shade Zero« is a debut full-length by flutist and composer Taiga Ultan, investigating the relationship between freedom and rules in music-making. Rather than rejecting structure, Ultan constructed strict, self-imposed systems and then deliberately misused and dismantled them. The work is grounded in the idea that rules never fully disappear; even within free-form practices, they are often quietly formed and reinforced through habit. By making rules explicit and working against them, Ultan sought to move beyond familiar sound-worlds and inherited assumptions about freedom.

The album unfolds across three interconnected movements, beginning with virtuosic, tonal flute playing rooted in classical discipline, expanding into extended flute techniques, and concluding with poetry and personal reflection. Recorded, mixed, and produced by Randall Dunn, »Shade Zero« presents a fully realized artistic statement by an emerging artist with extensive classical training who now lives and works in rural Maine, marking a decisive turn toward a selfdefined, process-driven musical practice.
