»Terraform – I Knud Viktors Lydspor« was a residency program in conjunction with the exhibition and cultural program »Put Your Ears to the Ground - Sound Painter Knud Viktor on Samsø«.

Knud Viktor grew up in Pillemark on Samsø island. He later moved to the South of France where he became a pioneer in field recording and acoustic ecology. In 2023, the community of Samsø organized multiple events with a focus on Viktor, whose works could be experienced at a number of locations around Samsø. As part of this, curators Jenny Gräf Sheppard and Jan Høgh Stricker invited a group of four artists to Agerupgård on the island of Samsø, DK, and to Sound Art Lab - located at Bang & Olufsen’s former research studios in Struer, DK. The artists were challenged to create a new work, with Knud Viktor’s oeuvre and methods in mind as a possible starting point.

The outcome of the residency was presented during a public event at Agerupgård. Nanna Elvin Hansen and Lieven Martens each presented a new composition on a quadraphonic speaker setup. Melissa van Drie and Sarah Sikorie both presented sound installations. These works are documented in this edition. During the event we also listened to Knud Viktor’s quadraphonic piece IMAGE IX – L’ARMOIRE. A stereo edit of this piece is also included in this edition. — »Terraform – I Knud Viktors Lydspor« was a collaboration between Terraform, Samsø Municipality’s Art Council and Sound Art Lab, Struer, supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, Sonning-Fonden and Art Music Denmark.

Nanna Elvin Hansen »The artistic practice of Nanna Elvin Hansen (b. 1989, DK) moves in the murk between art and activism. Building audio and film projects via local, collaborative processes, her works unveil structural violence that impacts on human rights and displacement.«

Lieven Martens »(...) performs conceptual music that challenges expectations and expands the boundaries of what's possible. Trough experimentation and mistakes he reveals a beauty, a storyline, a fantasy, or some hard fact. He researches field recording and the sociological dimensions of the soundscape.«

Melissa Van Drie »(...) works on histories of embodied practice, material culture and the senses, specialising in the field of Sound Studies. Most recently she is working on sound and sensory studies of food (which she began as Marie-Curie Fellow in 2018). She engages practice-based research methods and re-enactments in her historical inquiries and scholarly thinking. Her interdisciplinary research projects include: aesthetics, epistemologies, and technologies of sound in 19th century France; histories of sensory practices in medicine; studies of multispecies acoustic communication; and the roles of sound in food production and taste.«

Sarah Sikorie »(...) is an artist from Oslo who works with sculpture and installation, with a particular interest in the processual formation of our kinship and coexistence with other species. Her works are based on site-specific interactions.«

Knud Viktor »(...) 1924 - 2013, born in Copenhagen, was a Danish recordist and sound artist: »I don't pretend to make music, even if what I hear in nature is produced by forces that seek harmony. I see what I do as a continuation of the painting, surveying sounds that organises sonic intensities most unattendedly, contrastingly, modulated and dissonant. I try to create an enhanced sensation via the sounds, the air, the light, the wind, the rain, the rocks, the vegetation, the smells of Lubéron.«
