Founded in 1980, Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle (F.S.K) still plays with the original line-up: Justin Hoffman, Thomas Meinecke, Michaela Melián and Wilfried Petzi. Since 1990 there has been a fifth permanent member, drummer Carl Oesterhelt. From the beginning, the band saw itself in the tradition of art school bands: not virtuosity, but attitude was the central. F.S.K. play music about music, which applies to their own pieces as well as to numerous cover versions, which have been added to their repertoire especially since their frequent appearances and recordings in the U.K. (for John Peel) and U.S.A. (with David Lowery) in the 1980s and 1990s.
The new studio album draws in some respects on working methods from past periods of the band. As on the first albums, there are string and wind overdubs, which sometimes lapse into the late-Romantic orchestral, but are also of an improvisational nature (cello, four-hand piano, trumpet).
