Pain Management presents the first in a series of archival live recordings. The first offering lands via a double disk set from label boss Significant Other, a sprawling three hour haze of nascent dub excursions and sub bass conjuring deployed for the closing hours of Sustain Release festival 2024. Recorded between the hours of 3-6am in the woods of upstate New York, the since-infamous set is a rare documentation of the witching hour fugue state evocation quickly becoming the Sig O’ trademark.
Tracing the time slot’s roadmap of darkness-to-dawn, the opening is a crooning embrace of forest floor ambient - heartsleeve drone soup from the likes of Nueen, Drumloop, Richard Hronsky soundtracking the predawn dim.
From this sparse canvas of first-light longing anthems, the mix descends over the course of three hours into a fog machine session of after hours headiness and liminal sludge. A fugue state of dubwise beats cherry picked from the darker spectrum of dub and off-kilter percussion, seamlessly weaving the likes of cult weirdos such as Painkiller, Holy Tongue, Muslimgauze, Dregs - into a heads-down sleaze of dissociative revelry.
Described by one onlooker as ‘like witnessing a Roman orgy’ and another as ‘the moment the chill out room woke up’, with masterful patience the recording sees the pain management pro gently pull listeners from a latent slumber into fever dream motion to close out the festival.
Contains: Memphis rap anthems, early Sinéad O’Connor break tunes, Greek wedding music, liberal dub siren usage, steppers in abundance. Serious witching music - don’t sleep.
